The GCAI receives generous funding from the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Counterterrorism Bureau and invaluable substantive input from the U.S. Department of Justice\u2019s Office of International Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"803\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/global-central-auth-west-africa-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"10981\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/www.theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/global-central-auth-west-africa-1.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.theiij.org\/event\/iij-global-central-authorities-initiative-west-africa-regional-workshop-on-enhancing-judicial-cooperation-in-line-with-the-iij-good-practices-for-central-authorities\/global-central-auth-west-africa-1\/\" class=\"wp-image-10982\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/global-central-auth-west-africa-1.jpg 803w, https:\/\/theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/global-central-auth-west-africa-1-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/global-central-auth-west-africa-1-768x328.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 803px) 100vw, 803px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The West Africa Regional Workshop, held in Dakar, brought together 39 judges, prosecutors and investigators responsible for handling terrorism investigations and prosecutions from eleven countries across the West Africa region \u2013 Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal. They were joined by practitioner colleagues from Australia, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United States, and representatives of INTERPOL and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop provided an important opportunity for capacity building and practical skills development and application based on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/The-IIJ-Good-Practices-for-Central-Authorities_September-2018_ENG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>IIJ Good Practices for Central Authorities<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(hereafter <em>IIJ Good Practices<\/em>). Published in September 2018, the <em>IIJ Good Practices<\/em> (available in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-IIJ-Good-Practices-for-Central-Authorities_September-2018_ARA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arabic<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-IIJ-Good-Practices-for-Central-Authorities_September-2018_ENG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theiij.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/The-IIJ-Good-Practices-for-Central-Authorities_September-2018_FRE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French<\/a>) serve as a guide for Central Authorities \u2013 the national entities responsible for mutual legal assistance (MLA) and extradition \u2013 and provide a framework of institutional, legal and practical considerations for establishing and supporting the work of these important institutions. They were joined by Central Authority practitioners from Australia, Tanzania, Uganda and the United States who shared their shared real-world experiences in issuing, receiving and affording MLA and extradition requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants worked through practical exercises, applying the good practices, and discussing challenges and obstacles they face in their work, including overwhelming workloads with insufficient resources (staff and funds). They emphasised the critical importance of having the support of policy-makers and political actors to address these challenges.
