Reinhard Uhrig, IIJ Director of Administration and Outreach, participated in the 2016 OSCE-wide conference “Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism and Radicalization that Lead to Terrorism” (Berlin, 31 May – 1 June 2016). The conference was opened by the Foreign Minister of Germany, Germany’s Interior Minister and OSCE Secretary General and focussed on preventing and countering Violent Extremism and Radicalization that Lead to Terrorism. The event offered a forum for exchange on international trends concerning the fight against terrorism, focusing especially on the role of youth and women. Participants also discussed how to deal with returning foreign terrorist fighters and possible ways for their re-integration into society. More than 350 experts from OSCE participating States, international and regional organisations as well as academic and civil society organizations participated in the event. M. Uhrig updated the participants on the IIJ’s work on providing rule of law-based training to justice sector stakeholders and the Institute’s efforts related to preventing and countering violent extremism and juvenile justice in the CT context.
