IIJ Parliamentarians Initiative: The Nexus of Parliamentarians and Criminal Justice Actors in Counter Terrorism Symposium

Starting Date2018-05-02 Ending Date2018-05-03 Brussels, Belgium

On 02-03 May 2018, the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ) hosted a two-day symposium on The Nexus of Parliamentarians and Criminal Justice Actors in Counter Terrorism as a part of the IIJ’s Parliamentarians Initiative. The meeting brought together more than 40 parliamentarians and senior justice practitioners as well as international experts from the EU, NATO, Arab Parliament, Tech Against Terrorism, and Parliamentarians for Global Action to contribute to the discussions around the Implementation of the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) Valletta Recommendations relating to contributions by Parliamentarians In Developing an Effective Response to Terrorism adopted by the GCTF.

The symposium provided a platform for discussions on parliamentarians’ role in counter terrorism within the rule of law framework, and more specifically on the development of a Handbook for parliamentarians being drafted by the IIJ.  This Symposium completes the successful series of regional-level events the IIJ conducted, including at the Arab Parliament in Cairo on 24-25 October 2017 as part of an overall 3 year Initiative.
