On 19-20 October 2016, Maryam El Hajbi attended a conference at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, UK entitled “Preventing Violent Extremism by building inclusive and plural societies”. The conference highlighted how open, equitable, inclusive and pluralist societies can help guard against extremism and how Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) can help avoid the conditions conducive to the rise of violent extremism. The conference brought together a wide range of individuals from different spheres (government, parliamentarians, media, lawyers, business executives, NGOs) to share best practices and pursue opportunities to work together in order to build resilience against extremism.
