IIJ Core Course: Successful Prosecution of Terrorism Cases – Curriculum Development Expert Meeting
28 - 29 March 2019
Valletta, Malta
In March 2019, the IIJ convened a Curriculum Development Expert Meeting for a new Core Course on Successful Prosecutions of Terrorism Cases. The expert meeting, held in Malta, brought together 27 practitioners (including investigators, prosecutors, judges, and defence counsel – all with invaluable experience in dealing with terrorism-related matters) – from 23 countries across North, West, and East Africa, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.
During the two-day meeting, the practitioners shared their experiences and challenges in investigating, prosecuting, defending, and adjudicating terrorism cases. Presenting on real-world cases in which they themselves had played a role, the practitioners discussed how their respective legal systems address key challenges that arise in terrorism prosecutions. The practitioners provided a significant contribution to the development of the new Core Course, which the IIJ will offer to justice sector practitioners twice a year, commencing in September 2019.
