IIJ’s Participation in the European Union – Tajikistan Training Workshop in Dushanbe

On 4-5 June 2025, the IIJ participated in the European Union – Tajikistan Training Workshop: Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism in Tajikistan and Beyond in Dushanbe, Tajikistan at the invitation of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI).

The workshop, which formed part of the European Union (EU)’s multi-year project on preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE), was funded by the EU Commission Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI) and implemented by RUSI Europe.

Topics covered included conceptual frameworks in counter-terrorism and P/CVE, drivers and dynamics of violent extremism, youth resilience, the role of local governments and communities in prevention, radicalization among migrant workers, online radicalization, international cooperation for PCVE, and managing the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs).

In this context, the IIJ was invited to share its expertise, drawing on its experience in strengthening peer-to-peer and institutional dialogue, fostering partnerships, and promoting knowledge-sharing among countries working to repatriate and prosecute nationals allegedly involved in terrorist activities abroad, including FTFs and associated family members.

Overall, the workshop offered the IIJ an excellent platform to raise visibility for its work on the prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration (PRR) of FTFs repatriated from conflict zones. It also served to strengthen the IIJ’s network of stakeholders and partners in Tajikistan and the wider region.
